Wow what a game! Don't let anybody tell you that entertaining football is dead. This match had it all, entertaining attacking football, goals, end to end attacks but unfortunately every game like this also has to have a loser and on this occasion it was The Glovers.

Southend have never beaten Yeovil in the League before last night and on the strength of the start Yeovil made you didn't see anything other than another Yeovil victory.

The Glovers were out of the blocks like greyhounds pushing Southend back as they piled forward.

Pablo Bastianini was first to test Flahavan with a crisp shot and then Jevons went close with a chance.

Yeovil's midfield were all over Southend with Way and Johnson particularly active. Arron Davies too was having plenty of the ball but what Yeovil needed was a goal and that didn't materialise.

When Efetobore Sodje went off with a nasty kick on his Achilles Colin Miles came on which necessitated and bit of a reshuffle at the back but it did nothing to upset Yeovil's pattern.

Southend were slow getting into their stride but Goater and Gray had shots at the other end and Bently blasted one over the bar, much to Weale's relief.

Yeovil pressed on though and Jevons went close with a header from a Darren Way cross before Darren Way was unlucky not to give Yeovil the lead with a stinging volley from 30 yards that hit the bar with Flahavan beaten.

If this was boxing then Yeovil were way ahead on points but with no goal to show for their efforts, but as half time approached that was put to rights.

Jevons had been mauled by Maher all night and when he finally went down to yet another tap on the ankle the M.I.B. gave Yeovil a free kick just outside the box, much to Southend's displeasure.

Bastianini and Jevons lined up to take the kick and in the end Jevons curled an inch perfect shot straight past Flahavan and into the net.

It was no more than the Glovers deserved for although Southend had been improving the half belonged to Yeovil.

The second half though started brightly for the home side and although Yeovil were competing well there was a slight feeling of unease as Cole and Goater began to feature more in the play.

Up to that point Skiverton had certainly not been feeding The Goat, in fact it's fair to say he didn't get a scrap!

But with Southend pushing forward a goal seemed more and more likely and when it came Yeovil can consider themselves a tad unlucky.

Guttridge found himself unmarked in the middle and unleashed a strong shot which looked to be going wide until it took a wicked deflection that sent it way out of Weale's reach and into the net.

Eight minutes later and Southend took the lead when Gray ran on to Goater's flick to score past and advancing Chris Weale.

To be fair to the home side though they probably just about deserved the lead but Yeovil were not done yet and they swarmed forward again. Harrold had come on for Bastianini and Eastwood for Goater for The Shrimpers and Yeovil would have to be aware of his predatory instincts in the final period of the game.

Amankwaah was causing mayhem down the right in the closing minutes and three or four chances alone came from his strong running but the goal just wouldn't come.

With such a push forward it was inevitable that Yeovil were a bit thin at the back and in the closing minutes Eastwood punished Yeovil with two quick strikes to put the game beyond The Glovers.

Make no mistake though Southend were not three goals better than Yeovil and this team showed in their commitment for 95% of the game that they want to play for Thommo and that even the great Gary Johnson would probably have been looking at the same score line.
