Yeovil Town 1 Swansea City 0

A bumper Huish Park crowd welcomed Steve Thompson to his first fixture as the full-time Yeovil Town manager. The former assistant boss could not have wished for a better tie to register his first game in charge, with Swansea City ensuring Thompson's men faced a side of real quality.

Since returning to League One this season the Swans have enjoyed a fantastic start to the campaign, finding their feet at an early stage. Swansea entered the game having won four of their previous six games, drawing the other two.

The Glovers will have taken a great deal of confidence from their dramatic victory at Scunthorpe United, and after a match-turning performance Matt Harrold was awarded a starting place in attack.

Swansea began the game displaying the kind of football that has created such impressive form, testing Yeovil with an incredibly organised and slick passing game. With five minutes on the clock Chris Weale was called into action after defensive indecision. Sloppy communication saw Adrian Forbes presented with an opportunity that Weale tipped over the bar.

Six minutes later it was Yeovil who were creating trouble amongst the opposition defence. Excellent vision from Pablo Bastianini provided Phil Jevons with a sight of goal. However, the presence of his marker proved too much for the Liverpudlian, who could only fire into the side-netting.

Both sides continued to knock the ball around attractively and after 25 minutes Swansea 'keeper Willy Gueret was forced to make his first save of the game. Typifying his performances this season, the drive and pace of Kevin Amankwaah resulted in an accurate cross that found Jevons unmarked.

Unfortunately for the home fans the left-sided attacker was unable to get any real power behind his header, and his effort was comfortably blocked by Gueret.

The first half may not have been incident packed, but with seven minutes remaining before half time Terry Skiverton brought the game back to life. Lee Johnson's teasing free kick from the right could only be turned behind by the Swansea defence. From the resulting corner the charismatic leader muscled his way through a busy penalty area to head past a flailing 'keeper.

Despite the goal clearly rattling the South Wales outfit, Swansea continued to push forward. Forty-one minutes into the half Andy Robinson burst down the left, passing two Yeovil players in the process. However, the danger was soon thwarted by an inch-perfect tackle from a back-tracking Paul Terry.

Yeovil entered the half time break one goal ahead, having silenced a vocal travelling contingent. Despite appearing a technically sound and adventurous team the Swans only tested Weale the once, which would have been sure to disappoint Swansea manager Kenny Jackett.

As the two teams returned for the second half it was apparent both managers wanted to change the look of their side. Jackett removed Forbes and Andy Robinson, replacing them with Marc Goodfellow and the vastly experienced Kevin Nugent. After picking up a knock in the first period Yeovil's Paul Terry made way for Nathan Jones.

With the new half only a minute old, the Glovers immediately pushed forward, looking to extend their lead. Lee Johnson ensured Gueret's palms were left stinging, with a powerful free kick from 25 yards being scrambled away.

Thompson was forced to make his second change of the game after 56 minutes. A rash challenge on Liam Fontaine from visiting captain Roberto Martinez meant the end of the game for the Fulham loanee, and Colin Miles slotted into the back four.

As the half wore on the Yeovil defence was certainly the busier. Swansea refused to let the light drizzle dampen their creative fuse and after 68 minutes Chris Weale was called into serious action for only the second time of the match.

A rasping 20-yard drive from Goodfellow saw Weale dive to his right, palming the ball away. Lee Trundle was unable to take advantage of the rebound, losing his footing on the edge of the six yard box. Seven minutes later Trundle was again in the thick of the action, placing a 20-yard free kick narrowly over the bar.

Despite there being little action in the Swansea goal area, Yeovil stuck to their game, defending doggedly. The style of Trundle and the bulk of Nugent kept Skiverton and Sodje on their toes as the Glovers were pushed back. However, when enjoying possession, Yeovil looked to exploit any attacking possibility.

With five minutes of normal time remaining, Nugent left the field, allowing former Bristol Rovers defender Ijah Anderson a taste of the action.

Terry Skiverton's first half goal proved enough for the Glovers, as Steve Thompson's men ended Swansea's run of good form. The captain was a tower of strength at the back, leading with excellence. Every man in the side went about their task superbly, and Steve Thompson will be delighted with the valuable three points.

Yeovil had evidently learnt their defensive lessons from last week's clash with Scunthorpe and did brilliantly in not allowing Trundle to dictate proceedings. The midfield displayed great consistency in defending when needed and also always looking to supply the two front men. Bastianini is looking increasingly effective, whilst Harrold looked typically active during his 70 minutes on the field.

The Yeovil contingent of the 7578 crowd would have returned home elated with another victory, as the Glovers refused Swansea a sniff of the action and continued to impress under Thompson
