I suppose you could start by saying it's only the LDV Vans Trophy and the team weren't that bothered with the competition anyway.

Well that would be a lie because the team were interested and with a Final at The Millennium Stadium it would have been a great day out.

You could perhaps say that only one man and his dog turned up to watch the game (well 958 to be precise) and the Stadium had next to no atmosphere which was true.

But the real truth of this 2-0 defeat was that Leyton Orient just looked more up for it on the night.

Steve Thompson had shown his intent by fielding a near full strength team with the only change being Paul Terry in the midfield for Darren Way and Arron Davies coming in on the right wing.

Orient had made seven changes to their side after their weekend game with Lincoln and looked more enthusiastic from the first whistle.

Up front Echanomi was a constant threat , as was Aidan Palmer, and although Pablo Bastianini was holding the ball up well for The Glovers their seemed to be no real threat up front.

Jevons and Davies probed well from the flanks as did Amankwaah but nothing seemed to be really coming off for Yeovil.

It seemed ironic that in the middle of probably Yeovil's best spell that the home side went in front.

Carlisle won a corner for Orient and took the kick himself. Hanson headed goalwards only for the ball to catch a defender in the face and rebound back to him allowing him to strike home from close range to beat Weale.

The goal put Yeovil on the back foot again for a while and Orient had further chances from Echanomi and Duncan but it remained 1-0 at half time.

Nothing much changed in the second half and Yeovil were lucky to survive when a Carlisle free kick hit the bar with Weale beaten.

The Yeovil midfield was certainly missing the never say attitude of Darren Way and Paul Terry was lucky not to get a second yellow card when he took out Hanson. Fortunately the referee didn't take the ultimate sanction.

Phil Jevons had a chance but was off target as Kevin Amankwaah started to make more dangerous runs down the right.

In the 67th. minute Orient should have put the tie out of Yeovil's sight when Colin Miles brought the dangerous Gary Alexander down for a certain penalty.

penalty save

Nobody really expected anything other than a goal given Chris Weale's recent history on penalties but on this occasion he did the necessary, keeping out Alexander's kick, straight down the middle, with his legs.

Eight minutes later though and it was almost all over when McMahon's diagonal ball found Alexander who lashed the ball home beating Weale easily.

Further troubles befell Yeovil with Efetobore Sodje picking up a nasty knee injury and with all three subs already on Yeovil had to play out the last ten minutes with only ten men.

The Glovers were even denied a late consolation goal when Phil Jevon's header from a Bastianini rebound was saved brilliantly by Morris.

The defeat leaves Steve Thompson with some work to do in time for Saturday's full house match against Forest but at least there will be a crowd to stimulate the team.
