The Glovers found themselves back in familiar League Two territory for this League One game with Northampton Town, as they looked to get back to winning ways after the weekend defeat against Nottingham Forest.

And in making plans to gain those valuable three points, Russell Slade kept faith with the same line up that had put in good performances in the previous two games.

This saw Steve Mildenhall in goal, operating behind a flat back four of Terry Skiverton, Terrell Forbes, Nathan Jones and Mark Lynch.

In midfield Paul Terry had recovered from his back injury to take his position in the anchor role, with JP Kalala in the holding position, and Chris Cohen in attack.

Wayne Gray continued on the right wing and Lee Morris on the left, with both pushing up when required to support the lone striker Marcus Stewart.

Getting underway, the Cobblers put on some good early pressure.

Yeovil coped well and soon played themselves out of trouble with Morris busy on the wing, Cohen, Kalala and Terry seeing some good balls in midfield and Marcus Stewart starting to make a few inroads up front.

Despite this, Northampton did cause some problems with a series of well-taken corners early on, with Terry Skiverton having to be at his best to avert the danger.

A minute later and the Glovers were awarded a free kick about 40 yards out from the Cobblers goal.

Nathan Jones sent it in, Chris Cohen nodded it on, with the ball coming to Wayne Gray who got in a good shot from a few yards out, bringing a great smothering save from Mark Bunn.

By the quarter hour Yeovil were starting to buzz, with Morris having a fine game on the wing, Gray busy on the other side and the central midfield holding possession well.

On 16 minutes Kalala was fed the ball by Cohen and went on a mini run through the centre of the park, to eventually have a shot from 20 yards, which in the end took a slight deflection and went just wide.

In essence this was turning into quite an even game with both sides having success in attack, and both defences having to be sharp in defence in order to stay in it.

For Yeovil the Skiverton / Forbes partnership was as effective in defence as the Morris, Steward and Gray combination was up front.

The midfield were also doing well, with Kalala putting in a passionate display, Paul Terry looking solid and Chris Cohen strong as well.

On 31 minutes the Glovers were awarded a corner on the right side.  Cohen took it and swung the ball in well to the head of Skiverton.

skivo

He got in a good effort, but unfortunately put it just wide.

Although playing quite well, Northampton were causing their supporters a few scary moments with some rather erratic clearance play, giving the likes of Stewart and Gray a few opportunities.

In attack though the Cobblers were building in confidence, with this unfortunately coming to fruition on 32 minutes when they scored.

In attack, the ball came to Jerome Watt on the right side to get in a neat cross for Ian Taylor to send in a powerful shot.

Mildenhall made a superb instinctive save, but couldn't control the ball, with it coming back out to Jason Crowe, who simply banged it in from a few yards out.

The breakthrough gave the home side impetus and they attacked at will for the next few minutes.

Just one chance was created though, but it was a good one that saw Pedj Bojic send in a fine angled shot from about 20 yards that skimmed the Yeovil bar, inches from going in.

Yeovil were knocking the ball about quite nicely too, and pleasing their enthusiastic support with some good football, with Cohen, Morris, Kalala and Gray in the thick of the action.

For all their endeavour though, the Glovers still went in at the break a goal down.

terrell

They had played some good football, but so far had got no return for their efforts.

Could Russell inspire the lads at half time, and bring them deserved success on the field?

Time as they say, would tell.

Half Time - Northampton Town: 1   Yeovil Town: 0

Yeovil came out for the second period with vigour, having some good early success with Stewart and Cohen seeing plenty of the ball and Wayne Gray having an early chance on goal that was cleared by the home team in the nick of time.

Northampton were still lively themselves with Watt ever busy and making a nuisance of himself in the box with some good play.  The Glovers defence coped well though and things soon calmed a bit.

The attacks were now more measured than fast as Yeovil got in some good pressure, with Lynch busy on the right side, Kalala enjoying some good possession in the centre, and Morris and Stewart adding plenty of pressure in the forward positions.

A few of the players were perhaps looking a little tired, but despite this Yeovil were still marginally on top with some fine play.

Northampton were still looking dangerous though, and with it, Skiverton and co at the back had to be at their best to keep their side in the game.

The fatigue was starting to show in Lee Morris who had worked his socks off for the team, and he got an ovation from the travelling support when he came off the pitch on 62 minutes to be replaced by Ishmael Welsh.

Could Ishmael add the spark required to give his team the breakthrough, so giving them a chance to get something from this game?

It certainly seemed so as the Glovers speeded up their play and attacked with great greater force.

And the desired success finally came, when on 68 minutes Yeovil scored!

And it was a good move which lead to the goal.

Jean-Paul Kalala fed Welsh on the left wing, with him in turn sending in a great cross to the heart if the box for Mr Marksman Marcus Stewart to head into the back of the net superbly from 4 yards.  Brilliant!  1-1.

Yeovil now held all the possession and all the attacks as they looked to add that killer punch and take all three points.

And Russell Slade wanted the winner too, and showed this with the introduction of Danny Webb - the player who has been so prolific for the reserves this year and previously in pre-season too.

Yeovil looked the most likely, but they still had to be wary of the home side's capacity to hit hard and fast on the break.

The home support were getting increasingly frustrated with their team's lack of success in the game, as Yeovil continued to stifle them with some fine play.

Danny Webb had made a good difference with some enthusiastic play up front, making a real nuisance of himself, while partner Marcus Stewart was  very effective.

It was good late pressure from the Glovers, and Stewart went close on 88 minutes when Welsh got in a good cross.

The resulting corner saw the ball come to Danny Webb who unfortunately controlled it badly and sent his shot over the bar.

Yeovil were now controlling one-way traffic, holding the ball almost permanently in the Cobbler's final third.

Paul Terry went close right on 90 minutes when he broke into the box and forced Bunn into a good catching save.

It was a good effort and perhaps deserved more.

Down the other end Gilligan brought the best out of Mildenhall, with the former Grimsby man showing acrobats to keep his side on terms after a fine shot from the Northampton player.

With these late efforts kept out the game finished honours even.

So another fine performance from the Glovers in a game that they could so easily have won, especially in the final five or ten minutes when they dominated the play with some good attacks.

On reflection though, and giving regard to the whole of the game, a draw was probably a fair result, with neither sets of supporters likely to be critical of their players form, the standard of play or the commitment shown.

This was a good game to watch too with plenty of excellent attacking play.

For the Glovers the stars were Paul Terry who was solid throughout, JP Kalala who had a great game, Lee Morris who was tireless in his play and Marcus Stewart who was a constant threat up front, and who scored a superb goal.

This was a good all round team performance from a Yeovil team who must surely now travel up to Huddersfield on Saturday with a lot of heart for what will be another tough game.
