Following a very successful afternoon up at Huddersfield last weekend, the Glovers made a welcome return home to Huish Park and grabbed three hard fought points off another in-form team in Dario Gradi's Crewe Alexandra.

Coming into the game, Russell Slade kept with the same successful line-up from last week as he looked to push the team further towards the play-offs.

This saw Steve Mildenhall in goal, playing behind a back four of Mark Lynch, Terry Skiverton, Terrell Forbes and Nathan Jones.

With a five-man midfield in operation, Paul Terry played the anchor role, with JP Kalala in the centre alongside the more attacking Chris Cohen.

Lee Morris, with Arron Davies still preferred to Wayne Gray, played on the wings, pushing up whenever possible to support the lone striker Marcus Stewart.

With the action underway the home crowd got behind their team as they fought for early advantage in a game that both sides dearly wanted to win.

An early chance came in the 3rd minute for Yeovil as Stewart won the ball in the final third, and passed it on to Lynch to cross in for Davies to go close.

Arron bombed his way into the box a minute later, and after a little indecision looked to have lost the advantage, but in the end hooked the ball back well, bringing a great save from Williams in the Crewe goal.

The game was well and truly under way!

The Glovers were doing well now, and on 7 minutes had another good chance when Cohen played the ball to Morris in front of goal.  He miscontrolled it a bit, but still got his shot in, which Williams just kept out.

Crewe were attacking well themselves, and like Yeovil starting to play some good football.

They had a great chance too when the ball was played into the box to former Torquay striker Rodney Jack.

He did his work well, but when it came to it he completely mis-hit his effort, with the ball embarrassingly going nowhere.

There was some good football being played now, as both teams attacked well, with the Glovers probably having the better of the play.

And they went close again on 13 minutes when Stewart did well to beat his marker just inside the right of the box to cleverly send in a good chip shot which beat the 'keeper, going inches over the bar.

The Glovers were playing well, with Stewart lively up front, Davies doing well on the flank, Morris a good threat, and the central midfield working their socks off!

Davies went close again on 25 minutes when he made a great run across the box to send a shot in from 20 yards, which beat Williams, but went just wide of the far post.

The visitors were holding good possession too, but creating very little in front of goal, though Varney and Maynard were always a threat for Skiverton and Co in the Yeovil defence.

They had another good chance on 31 minutes when Cox was played into the box, but as he lined up his shot, Terry Skiverton came from nowhere to put in an inch perfect tackle to send the ball out for a corner.

As we came into the last 15 minutes of the half this was still an even affair, with either side looking capable of taking the advantage before the break.

For Yeovil, Chris Cohen was growing in influence, starting to control the midfield, ably backed by a very busy Kalala, and the ever dangerous front line.

The half appeared to be running its course with both sides attacking, and perhaps content with the goalless affair, but then right on half time the game was turned on its head with the most bizarre of goals.

Yeovil won a corner which Arron Davies swung in to the heart of the Crewe box.

Williams rose to catch it, with the ball appearing to be safe, but as he grabbed it he somehow managed to push the ball over his shoulder and into the back of his own net.

Definitely an own goal, and the most weird of goals!

See you on Question of Sport!!  1-0

Half Time - Yeovil Town: 1  Crewe Alexandra: 0

With the Glovers attacking the Westland end in the second period, Crewe got off to a good start with an early corner.

The ball was cleared, with Morris and Stewart combining well as they attacked at speed, but the Crewe defence managed to clear it.

Morris was looking very lively down the flank, and indeed in the central area too, where he seemed to be spending more and more of his time as the Glovers appeared to revert to more of a 4-4-2, although they did allow themselves the flexibility of reverting to the 4-5-1 when needing to keep it tight.

Though the Glovers weren't exactly bedding in, they were certainly determined to keep their advantage in the game with a good dogged display.

The game was showing signs of livening up though when on 64 minutes Chris Cohen received the ball and ran well across the box to get in a good shot from 18 yards, which went just wide.

The Gaffer certainly looked to be going for the win, and seconds later introduced Wayne Gray who immediately livened the proceedings.

A matter of minutes later the Gloves scored.

Awarded a corner, Cohen swung the ball in for Skiverton to flick on to Marcus Stewart who got in an excellent header which was well saved by Williams.

The keeper couldn't hold it though, and the ball came to Paul Terry who forced the ball over the line from close range.  A well worked goal!2-0!

jp

Was it safe for the Glovers? Crewe certainly didn't seem to think so, with Higdon going close soon after, but in reality Yeovil looked to have it in the bag.

The visitors attacked quite well still, but Yeovil defended better, and as a result continued to look comfortable, and even capable of grabbing a third.

They went close again on 84 minutes, and it was Terry again who headed just over the bar following a fine cross from Mark Lynch.A good effort and not far off.

Though both sides were still after goals, the game itself seemed to have settled for the Yeovil win, and with it the proceedings reached their conclusion with Russell Slade grinning from ear to ear.

This had been a good and hard fought win for the Glovers, and one fully deserved, as they managed to overcome a previously impressive Crewe side.

arron

Though the first goal was perhaps a little bizarre and the second a bit scrappy, the 2-0 score line was a fair reflection of the game, with a fine all-round team performance coming in from Yeovil as they moved up to 6th in the table.

The match sponsors gave the Man of the Match award to Marcus Stewart, and this was fully deserved, with other notable displays coming in from Terrell Forbes, Terry Skiverton, Mark Lynch, Paul Terry, JP Kalala and Chris Cohen.

celebration

So another home game coming up on Tuesday night, and with opponents Brighton losing 3-1 to Carlisle this afternoon, Russell Slade must be looking forward to the game.
