The Glovers got back to winning ways at Huish Park this afternoon with a fine 2-0 win over Kent side Gillingham.

A goal in each half, the first from Leon Best and the second from Chris Cohen were enough to seal the points, and as a result sent team back into the play-offs.

Coming into the game Russell Slade was forced into a number of changes to his line-up as he compensated for the loss of Paul Terry and Mark Lynch, both being out with long term injuries.

This saw the team line up with Steve Mildenhall in goal, behind Martin Cranie at right back, Nathan Jones on the left, and both Terry Skiverton and Terrell Forbes in the centre.

With Cranie moving into the defence to cover for Lynch, Chris Cohen moved to the centre of midfield to partner JP Kalala who was in for Paul Terry.

Arron Davies then took his place on the left wing, with Martin Brittain on the right and a strike force of Leon Best and Lee Morris up front.

Both sides got off to confident starts, knocking the ball about nicely in midfield.

The game was not being played at a million miles an hour, but the Glovers looked good in attack, with Davies having a fine early chance when he shot at goal from just outside the box, forcing Brill into a low save.

The Glovers were working hard in midfield, trying to get the ball up to Morris and Best, and were having some success, though shots on goal were of a premium,

Certainly though both Kalala and Cohen were seeing plenty of the ball, and Davies was starting to get past his man too, with Yeovil holding the majority of the possession.

The game showed signs of hotting up, with the Glovers definitely on top, attacking the visitors well.

This good play gave Russell Slade's men a deserved lead on 17 minutes.

Following a fine move in midfield Chris Cohen played Leon Best clear of the Gills' defence.

The crowd as well as the players first thought that he was offside, but the flag stayed down, with the striker confidently sweeping the ball past Brill for a wonderfully taken goal. First blood Yeovil!  1-0!

It was a deserved lead, and the Glovers were hungry for more, with Brittain a few minutes later crossing in to Morris in the centre of the box to hook the ball nicely in, but unfortunately just over the bar.

Yeovil were much the better of the two sides, with some fine play coming in from Cohen, Kalala, Davies, Morris and Best.

Best was a real live wire, causing the Gills' defence a multitude of problems with his strong confident play in and around the box.

He was hungry for more goals, and you would certainly not bet against him having done so.

Coming up to the half hour the Glovers were still on top, though the game had slowed down again.

Yeovil were holding most of the possession, keeping any danger from the opposition down to a minimum in what was turning out to be a good professional display.

In attack the Glovers were still looking good, though there were little or no chances on goal.

As the game approached half time the Gills started to see a lot more of the ball, and with it their attacks increased, with a lot more pressure on the Glovers' box.

Some good defending came in from Skiverton, Forbes, Cranie and Co. and with it Yeovil soon played themselves out of trouble to end the half in confident mood, and rightly with the advantage.

Half Time - Yeovil Town:  1 Gillingham: 0

Both sides got off to a frantic start in the new half, attacking with confidence.

The Gills forced an early corner which was easily cleared, with Yeovil breaking fast.

The ball eventually came to Brittain on the right who played it in for Davies to have a fine shot cleared off the line by Ben Chorley.

The ball was played in again to Davies seconds later to go close at the far post with a decent effort that went inches wide.

Arron was having a field day, and on 50 minutes nearly got on the end of a cross from Nathan Jones, after a fine run down the left wing as he rushed in on goal.

Willed on by the roar of the Westland Terrace, Yeovil were now attacking the visitors' box at will.

Lee Morris was seeing a lot of the ball, with Leon Best and Arron Davies busy too.

The match had speeded up considerably in this half, and with it the Glovers were hungry to add to their tally.

Gillingham were still dangerous at times, and they proved this well on 57 minutes when Clint Easton made a fine run down the wing, getting the ball across to Garry Mullugan whose close range shot was brilliantly saved by the knees of Mildenhall.

Yeovil needed a second goal to give them a cushion and they achieved this brilliantly on 60 minutes when they scored their second of the afternoon.

Awarded a corner on the left side, Brittain launched the ball into the heart of the penalty area.

An attempted clearance was made, but only as far as Chris Cohen who made no mistake from 10 yards as he banged the ball into the top of the net. Great goal!  2-0.

The Glovers were on fire now as they hit the opposition with force.

Morris went close on 62 minutes as his shot was deflected away, and seconds later Davies nearly got his first of the afternoon, but was denied by a good save from Dean Brill in the Gills' goal.

Coming into the final 15 minutes Yeovil's play was confident, one touch, fast running, and a joy to watch as they attacked the Gills' box brilliantly.

They had a great opportunity to make it three on 78 minutes when Arron Davies made a superb run down the right wing, cutting into the box to shoot with power, but unfortunately into the side netting. A great effort and unlucky!

Seconds later and Terry Skiverton had a fine header cleared off the line, following a corner in from Brittain, and with it the Glovers looked good to add to their now commanding lead.

Gillingham had a late rally though, hitting Steve Mildenhall's goal with a series of shots, but some great play by the big 'keeper, and a clearance off the line by Terrell Forbes kept the clean sheet.

However, the Gills could well have nicked one at the end when awarded a free kick in front of the Yeovil box.

Clint Easton took it, and swung the ball well past the Glovers wall, beating Mildenhall, but seeing his effort come back off the right hand post.

To have conceded it would have been rough justice for the Glovers, who after an excellent second half performance fully deserved their 2-0 victory.

Three would not have flattered Yeovil either. Their play was quieter in the first half, but in the second they looked full of confidence and ready to dispense of the opposition.

Lee Morris probably had his best performance for the club, and there were also some excellent displays from Nathan Jones, Martin Cranie, Terrell Forbes, Chris Cohen and Leon Best.

leon

So a good win and a good performance that will hopefully now set the team up for a fine festive season.
