Hartlepool United were welcomed by a wet Huish Park after making their longest league journey of the season.

Persistent rain in the build-up to the game meant the groundsmen had to work tirlessly before kick off and produced an almost immaculate surface.

Yeovil Town manager Russell Slade was forced to make one change to the starting line-up against AFC Bournemouth, with Nathan Jones serving a one-game suspension for a red card.

Gary Dempsey slotted in the centre of midfield as Liverpool loanee Lee Peltier reverting to right back as Terrell Forbes played on the left.

Hartlepool seemed none the worse for the distance travelled, passing confidently and carving out a move that saw Michael Mackay poke wide.

later the Glovers launched their first meaningful of the game after seven minutes. Talented Zoltan Stieber burst down the left, before delivering a cross that evaded all in green and white.

Peltier overlapping on the right fed Marcus Stewart just inside the 18 yard box, who slotted the ball through for Paul Warne who was denied by a strong save by Jan Budtz.

Hartlepool took three minutes more to open the scoring with a goal of sublime skill. Mackay turned inside Scott Guyett and unleashed a curling shot from 25 yards that crept past a despairing Steve Mildenhall.

Yeovil reacted positively and were denied by the woodwork after 11 minutes James Walker was teed-up by Terry Skiverton, in the box and the Charlton Athletic striker's strike was deflected against the post by Anthony Sweeney.

Despite the scoreline neither side were enjoying periods of extended possession. Both defences looked shaky with Mackay and Walker looking threatening for Hartlepool and Yeovil.

Shortly before the half hour mark scores were levelled as a Stieber corner lead to a second goal in as many games.

Captain Skiverton met the inch-perfect set piece with a towering header that left Budtz with little chance.

The Huish Park faithful were on their feet again three minutes later when the Hartlepool back four were again tested by a probing cross.

Marcus Stewart rose the highest to Peltier's deep ball heading home on the day his two sons were mascots.

Hartlepool could have equalised after 36 minutes but former Sheffield Wednesday attacker Ritchie Humphreys could only blast over a snapshot unmarked ten yards from goal.

The visitors came close moments later when Mildenhall snatched the ball at the feet of James Brown.

Heroics from the Yeovil 'keeper maintained his team's advantage five minutes beforehalf time when a rasping Humpreys free kick was kept out by a dive to his left.

The referee's whistle brought an entertaining first half to a close with the Glovers still ahead. Both sides had shown their attacking prowess, but also demonstrated defensive instability.

Half Time: Yeovil Town 2 Hartlepool United 1

Yeovil Town came out guns-blazing for the restart and were unlucky not to score a third two minutes in. Walker tried his hardest to get on the end of a Glovers attack, only for the ball to creep wide in a 50/50 clash with Budtz.

Budtz was in the thick of it three minutes later. Stieber's free kick was glanced on by Stewart and the giant shot-stopper clung to the ball above his head.

Stieber's trickery down the left and from set-pieces was causing Hartlepool difficulty and twice in three minutes the away defence were forced to hack away corners.

In a game that was still very much end-to-end, Yeovil were enjoying the better of the play. Walker and Stewart were linking well in attack operating in front of a midfield showing purpose and cohesion often lacking previously in the season.

Walker made way for Lloyd Owusu after 70 minutes as Slade tried to give the Hartlepool defenders a different test.

The strong Ghanaian nearly made the score sheet with his second touch of the game. Warne's powerful drive after cutting in from the right fizzed across goal with Owusu narrowly missing out.

After 75 minutes Darren Way jinked inside two Hartlepool players and with a clear sight at goal unselfishly crossed towards the penalty spot. With Stewart advancing Budtz did well to claim the ball.

Hartlepool responded by missing a golden opportunity to get a second before Owusu extended the gap between the teams. After being put clear by Stewart, the substitute had his first effort one-on-one clawed away.

The Yeovil player regained his composure to delicately chip the ball into the net for his ninth of the season.

Stieber and Way were both given deserved standing ovations when they were substituted in the 80th minute to be replaced by Ritchie Jones and Anthony Barry.

Two wins on the bounce will have given Slade's squad confidence ahead of the Christmas period, as well as momentum.

Yeovil were made to fight after falling behind to a first class strike but came from behind and showed they were capable of creating goal-scoring chances.

Stieber's class shone through and whereas he still has a lot to offer the Glovers will benefit from his time at the club. Across the field Yeovil played as a unit and comprehensively beat one of the better sides in League One.
