League One football was finally assured for Yeovil Town yesterday as The Glovers ruined the Swansea celebration party with a 2-1 victory at The Liberty Stadium.

After a dismal display last week Russell Slade had threatened changes and he was true to his word as skipper Terry Skiverton returned to the side while Slade also gave a debut to 18 year old Irishman Aiden Downes, on loan from Everton, in midfield.

Going for a single striker in Marcus Stewart Slade also opted to play Jaime Peters in a more central role in front of a three man midfield.

Naturally with the Championship at stake Swansea started well penning in Yeovil for long periods, but without seriously troubling the Glovers defence.

Swansea won a series of first half corner but were unable to really threaten Steve Mildenhall's goal but Yeovil were always dangerous on the break.

It was one of these Glovers breakaways in the 24th. minute that brought them their first goal.

Marvin Williams broke down the right and in a sweeping move found an unmarked Terry Skiverton who decisively headed past De Vries in the home goal.

It was a pressure lifting goal for the visitors but Yeovil knew there was still a lot of work to do with over two thirds of the match still to go.

Marcus Stewart had a glorious chance to increase that lead six minutes later when, unmarked in the centre, he headed for goal but this time De Vries saved.

Swansea continued to have large periods of possession but the Yeovil defence was a different kettle of fish this week with decisive defending when it was needed.

Yeovil started the second half with a more composed look to their play and with Peters and Downes always a threat with their pace, and Nathan Smith putting in yet another confident display they showed no sign of flagging.

Just before the hour Marcus Stewart had another good header saved by De Vries as Yeovil proved very dangerous on the break.

When Yeovil went 2-0 ahead though Slade was beginning to relax on the touchline as safety moved ever closer.

Lee Peltier swept in a cross from the right which found young Irishman Aiden Downes completely unmarked and he hammered home on the volley with great confidence to put Yeovil in a commanding position.

Swansea manager Roberto Martinez reacted immediately by bringing on Bauza and  and it was Anderson who brought The Swans back into it on the 78th. minute.

Yeovil had failed to clear their lines from yet another Swansea raid and Robinson was on hand to stab the ball home from close range.

It was to set up a tense finish Slade and his men as Swansea threw everything at Yeovil but even then there was still time for Anthony Barry to miss a couple of sitters and a red card for Swansea's Darren Pratley for a foul on Lloyd Owusu as he tried to set up another chance for Barry.

downes

So, in the end, everybody went away happy as a late Southend goal had ensured Swansea were Champions while Yeovil could look forward to League One football again next season.

Manager Slade said after the game: "Success for the club is staying in this division and I am proud of all my players and staff because we have now achieved that this season."
