The Glovers started off their league season with a 1-0 defeat up at the Galphram Stadium this afternoon, after three successive victories over hosts Huddersfield Town in recent seasons.

They were perhaps unfortunate not to have got a point from the game, especially after having superior possession in the second half.

However, they failed to capitalise on the chances created, being unable to level Luke Beckett's 16th minute strike for Huddersfield.

Coming into the game, Russell Slade sprang few surprises, with the now fit Paul Warne coming back into the side on the left of midfield, and Scott Guyett partnering Terrell Forbes in defence in the absence of the injured Terry Skiverton.

The Glovers showed some good invention in the game, and probably had the better of the possession, but as Russell Slade pointed out after the match, it is no good holding 55 per cent of the ball, and creating chances, but not putting them away.

The first of those opportunities came as early as the second minute, with Lloyd Owusu having a reasonable effort saved by Terriers 'keeper Matt Glennon.

The play was fairly even in the first fifteen minutes, and with some inventive play in midfield, both teams soon started to create chances, with Owusu, Stewart, Williams and Warne looking lively for Yeovil, and Sinclair, Schofield and Beckett seeing plenty of the ball for Huddersfield.

On ten minutes Yeovil had a decent opportunity when Stewart got in a header from 8 yards after a flick on from Guyett. The former Huddersfield player was having a busy time, and almost connected with a low Warne cross on 14 minutes.

Huddersfield were still the bigger threat, and subsequently opened their season's account on 16 minutes when Danny Schofield crossed in from the right for Luke Beckett to head the ball in from close range. 0-1.

The goal put a spring into the Terriers' step, as they attacked Yeovil with force looking to double their tally.

The Glovers defence was in good form though, and withheld the pressure, with the midfield gradually getting them back into the game, Warne playing the star role.

Williams and Owusu were also well involved, with Anthony Barry playing some good balls into attack.

Huddersfield were still the better side, although neither team really seemed likely to add the game's tally before the break, despite Warne having a chance on 43 minutes, after receiving the ball just inside the box from Owusu.

Unfortunately he put his effort over the bar, and the Glovers had it all to do in the second half.

Despite the home side piling on the pressure after half time with a series of corners, Yeovil went on to have the better of the play in those final 45 minutes.

Warne continued to impress on the left, Peltier started to see more of the ball in midfield, linking well with Barry, and the front two continued to be busy.

Owusu was making a menace of himself in the box, but nothing seemed to be going his way - a fact typified on 57 minutes when a golden opportunity evaded him when Williams played in a cross from the right, but with the ball too strong, the former Brentford man was unable to take advantage of an open goal.

Four minutes later Guyett did well to connect with an in-coming free kick from Nathan Jones, but headed it over the bar, with the Australian coming off the worse after an over enthusiastic challenge from a Terriers' defender.

On 73 minutes Russell Slade adopted a more attacking 3-4-3 formation, bringing on Morris and Cochrane for Williams and Lynch respectively.

Morris was immediately lively, seemingly involved in every attack, as the Glovers piled on the pressure in the final fifteen minutes.

On 81 minutes they produced a fine move when Cochrane won the ball in the final third to send it to Stewart, who in turn played it into the centre of the box to Owusu.

In the end though, he over stretched himself, and his shot was too weak and was easily gathered by Glennon.

matty

It probably typified the game for Yeovil, with them showing good promise in the invention of their play, but unable to put away any of the opportunities created.
