Yeovil Town were dumped out of the Carling Cup last night, victims of an electric first half display from Hereford United as they ran the Glovers' defence ragged, banging in four goals, and effectively killing the tie off before half time.

Yeovil got one back early in the second half through Lloyd Owusu, but by then it was a bridge too far for Yeovil, who never really looked like coming back into it.

Coming into the game, Russell Slade made one change from the side that played at the Galpharm Stadium last weekend, with Lee Morris coming in for the injured Marcus Stewart.

Yeovil had most of the early play, but the home side soon took a strangle hold on the game, going on to dominate throughout.

Yeovil were far from their best, and were continually punished, with Lionel Ainsworth, Trevor Benjamin, Theo Robinson and Clint Easton coming at them from all angles.

It took them just eight minutes to take first blood, when Ainsworth received the ball 25 yards out from Clint Easton to blast it past the diving Steve Mildenhall. 0-1.

Two minutes later Benjamin picked up a loose ball and sent it to Robinson to hit a shot against the bar from just inside the box. Several players including Ainsworth and Robinson again had pot shots, but Mildenhall managed to clear his line.

The Bulls continued to attack with force, with Yeovil finding it difficult to cope with the pace of Ainsworth, who was in blistering form.

Mildenhall saved from Benjamin on 15 minutes, and again from Toumani Diagourada on 20 minutes, and a second goal seemed likely.

It finally came on 24 minutes when Easton got in a cross for Ainsworth to bang the ball into the bottom corner of Mildenhall's goal. 0-2.

Hereford really came at Yeovil now, with Beckwirth, Ainsworth, Easton and Benjamin all impressing.

Yeovil were still seeing some possession, and their first chance came on 31 minutes when they won a free kick on the edge of the Hereford box that was curled in nicely by Anthony Barry, but Wayne Brown saved well.

Hereford increased their lead on 34 minutes after being awarded a free kick in front of the Yeovil box.

Richard Rose sent it in, and it was only half cleared by Yeovil, with the loose ball coming to Easton, who hit it past Mildenhall from 8 yards. 0-3.

Hereford continued to pressurise, and on 40 minutes piled on the agony when Ainsworth scored a great solo goal, wrong footing the Yeovil defence to blast in from 15 yards. 0-4.

Russell Slade made all three substitutions at half time, bringing on Matty Rose, Justin Cochrane and Craig Alcock for Nathan Jones, Mark Lynch and Marvin Williams.

Playing in a 4-3-3 formation, with the full backs Rose and Alcock pushing up into attack, and Paul Warne joining the forward line, the Glovers were improved, and they managed to get a goal back on 50 minutes.

Awarded a corner, Barry sent the ball in for Guyett to head towards goal, but his effort was cleared off the line by a defender, but only as far as Owusu who headed in from 8 yards. 1-4.

Hereford continued to see plenty of the ball, with Easton and Ainsworth still in threatening mood, and the latter went close on 53 minutes with a well taken free kick from just outside the box.

The game started to slow down, but in reality the Bull's job was done.

However, they were still intent on adding to their tally, and on 58 minutes another break from Ainsworth saw the ball played to Benjamin and then to Ben Smith to powerfully hit in a shot from 20 yards that went inches wide of Mildenhall's far post.

Hereford turned up the heat in the final 20 minutes, with Benjamin going close on 71 minutes, and Easton testing Mildenhall with a powerful free kick on 74 minutes.

Robinson went close on 83 minutes, hitting a decent shot from twenty yards, and Rose could have scored in the 88th minute with a well angled shot.

But by then, Yeovil's 2007/08 Carling Cup campaign had come to an end.
