Russell Slade saw his Yeovil Town side provide him with his first cup win since coming to the club, as they eased their way past a resilient Shrewsbury Town at Huish Park this evening.

The League Two side made the Glovers work hard for their victory, but in the end a 53rd minute Lloyd Owusu goal was enough to send them into the second round, after a comfortable 1-0 win.

Coming into the game, Yeovil kept with the diamond formation, making two changes from the side that drew with Tranmere on Saturday, with Craig Alcock replacing Matty Rose at right back, and Anthony Barry coming into the centre of midfield for the injured Justin Cochrane.

Russell Slade said after the game that Shrewsbury seemed intent on playing for penalties, and certainly they played it tight at the back, particularly in the first half, trying their best to frustrate the Glovers throughout.

Yeovil were in confident mood, and right from the start were putting in some neat passing, with Lee Peltier, Ritchie Jones and Anthony Barry all looking sharp.

Shrew

Marcus Stewart was also enjoyed a fine game, linking superbly with the midfield and forward line, and in particular with the impressive Paul Warne.

Yeovil's first chance came on five minutes when Ritchie Jones won the ball in midfield to race into the box.

The ball was cleared, but came back out to Lloyd Owusu who sent an immediate cross to the advancing Stewart to get in a low shot that forced Chris McKenzie in the Shrews' goal into a decent save.

In truth, chances were few and far between, although the supporters were enjoying an entertaining game.

Shrewsbury were having their moments, and put Yeovil under some pressure around the fifteen minute mark, forcing a number of corners, but Mildenhall rarely looked troubled.

Shrew

Yeovil were always looking the more comfortable of the two, with Barry going close with a long range shot over the bar on 25 minutes.

The best chance of the first period came ten minutes later from a great move that saw the impressive Alcock make his way down the line, to send the ball to Stewart who in turn sent it to Warne.

Stewart was soon in the box to receive the ball, to get in a decent shot from ten yards that looked to be going in, but was hooked off the line by Kelvin Langmead.

Warne and Stewart were having wonderful games, and they both combined just on half time when the latter won the ball on the left and sent it to Warne to break into the box, and after getting the better of a huddle of defenders got in a low shot that was well saved by McKenzie.

Yeovil continued to impress in the second period, and gradually they started to break the opposition down and create more chances.

The first of the half went to the visitors though, when on 48 minutes Stuart Nicholson broke into the Yeovil box from the right side, and despite being cut out by the Yeovil defence managed to get in his shot, which Mildenhall stopped with his legs.

Yeovil's hard work paid off in the 53rd minute when Anthony Barry played in Owusu, who beat the offside trap to advance into the box to slip the ball under the 'keeper from ten yards. 1-0.

Although the goal woke Shrewsbury into getting in a few more attacks, Yeovil continued to look comfortable, both on the ball and maintaining their lead

Shrew

Owusu headed over the bar from a Ritchie Jones cross on 60 minutes, and again from an Anthony Barry free kick two minutes later.

Shrew

The Shrews still had their moments, and Mildenhall denied Danny Hall with a good save on 67 minutes.

However, Yeovil were superior in their play, and Owusu went close on 70 minutes following a good Stewart cross into the box.

Shrewsbury were having small periods of pressure, but the Yeovil defence played it tight and allowed very little through.

Michael Symes got in a glancing header from a corner that skimmed the cross bar on 80 minutes, and Chris Humphrey made a fast break down the right to get in a low shot across the front of the goal three minutes later.

But by then the Glovers had it wrapped up, and the supporters were starting to dream of the possibility of another Wembley date for later on in the season.
