Ritchie Jones netted the winning penalty as Yeovil battled their way into the Johnstone's Paint Trophy area quarter-finals.

The Glovers banished memories of their Carling Cup exit at Edgar Street as they shut out the Bulls' attack.

And while Yeovil failed to find the back of the net themselves during 90 minutes, they were clinical in the penalty shoot-out.

Marcus Stewart, Anthony Barry Lloyd Owusu and Jones all scored, with Kevin Betsy's effort well saved by home keeper Michael Ingham.

And with Romain Larrieu keeping out Trevor Benjamin's spot-kick and Dean Beckwith missing the target, the Glovers triumphed 4-2.

The victory came at a price, with both Nathan Jones (dead leg) and Matt Rose (ankle) limping off in the closing minutes, but Town are a step closer to Wembley.

The Bulls started brightly, with Dean Beckwith coming close with a header from a Simon Johnson corner in the first minute.

Yeovil hit back, with Paul Warne crossing for Owusu, but the big striker shot weakly straight at keeper Ingham.

Barry then send a long-range effort well over the crossbar, while Nathan Jones saw a fierce right-foot drive blocked by a home defender.

Clint Easton tested Romain Larrieu in the Yeovil goal with a curling effort on 19 minutes, before Owusu shot wildly wide from a tight angle.

Larrieu was again called into action on the half-hour, with Kris Taylor slamming a shot from distance straight into the Frenchman's chest.

Barry tried his luck from range again on 33 minutes and found the target this time, with Ingham reacting well to push the ball round the post.

Ingham also kept out a shot from Matthew Rose, while Luke Webb headed wide for Hereford as the game swung from end to end.

But the best chance of the half fell to Benjamin, who was put clean through by Johnson in the 40th minute.

But with only Larrieu to beat, the experienced striker somehow contrived to slice his shot wide from just six yards out.

At the start of the second half Bulls midfielder Easton curled a free-kick just wide from 20 yards, but it was Yeovil creating the better chances.

On 59 minutes Ingham rescued his side when he plucked Betsy's cross out of the air with Matt Rose waiting to pounce.

A minute later the former Sunderland stopper was called into action again, this time keeping out Owusu's low shot.

But the Glovers should have taken the lead just seconds after that when Ingham raced from his goal to clear as Owusu threatened, only to kick the ball straight to Town sub Simon Gillett.

Gillett fired a shot at the Bulls' unattended net, but defender John McCombe dived full length to divert to ball over the bar with his outstretched foot and the game went to penalties.

Yeovil: Larrieu, Lynch, Guyett, Forbes, Nathan Jones (Alcock 90), Betsy, Rose (Ritchie Jones 90), Barry, Warne (Gillett 59), Stewart, Owusu.
Subs Not Used: Hughes, Domoraud.
